A Chance at a Katelyn James Workshop!!!

So, I've been following this wonderful photographer named Katelyn James for a year or two. Recently she's started hosting workshops and I've really, really wanted to go to one ever since she held her first one. I've looked into going and the price has been way more than I can afford right now (it'd be more than I made in my entire year of photography last year), so I had settled for going to one when I start making more $. (I've hoped and hoped I could maybe scratch together the $750 to go...in fact I was really considering it for this workshop...but the Lord has made another way for me that won't cost me anything!!)

Anyways, I'm really excited because she just mentioned (today!) on her blog that she's giving away one spot in her upcoming workshop! I'm so excited!!

In order to enter for the free spot, I have to write up my photography story and submit it to her. I've already sort of done this on "My Equipment (and camera story!)" page, so I'm re-posting that info here in this post, as well as some more detail.

Here it goes!

My very first camera was a Sony DSC-N2. It was a very nice camera, with tons of settings and a neat little touch screen! After a while, for some reason my flash decided to quit on me. It would flash every now and then, but the pictures would come out white or black...so it still didn't "work"! :) I took lots of pictures of my family indoors so no-flash wasn't good. Sometime around November 2008 a friend of ours let me borrow his Nikon D40 camera. That was so exciting! I was snapping pictures everywhere, thoroughly enjoying the professionalism of a DSLR! :-D (To see some of my first pictures, go here) Since I was used to a hand-held camera, switching lenses and everything was some work but I didn't mind! I had to give the camera back sometime before Christmas and I very soon lost my interest in taking pictures after going back to my Sony camera. Daddy saw my lack of interest and started planning on getting me something better.

In January/February of 2009 another friend of ours' asked me to take pictures at her wedding. It was 2 months after my 13th birthday and, after much prayer and emailing, I decided to accept the opportunity. In order to do that, I knew I would need a better camera, but I certainly did not have the money. Little did I know that Daddy had been secretly researching (some nights he was up past midnight!) everything about DSLR camera's.

Before bed at night, I would talk to my sisters about my intense desire for a better camera and, Hannah, my eldest sister, would just sweetly smile at me. (Little did I know that she knew Daddy was getting me one! :)

So, a few days before Valentine's Day a huge box arrived. I thought it was for Mama, as Daddy loves to surprise her, but I was wrong. Before we left for church, a night or two after the box arrived, Daddy suggested that we open the box. Hannah made her way over to me and offered to take pictures (something she never does), and I gave her a puzzled look as she pushed me out of the way and towards the boxes. I should've suspected something when everyone didn't start scrambling to open them, but I still didn't get suspicious. Daddy pulled me onto his knee and told me to start opening the box. I did and once all 4 flaps were open I saw the word "NIKON" and I think my mouth fell open (and the tears started coming!)! I thought the boxes were for Mama and they were not!!! They were for me! Shocked, I took everything out and told Daddy thank you so much. Everyone else was standing around smiling as Hannah took pictures. (The pictures didn't turn out well because of the no-flash problem...) Sadly we had to leave so we could go eat and make it to church on time, so I had to pull myself away. When we returned home that night I snapped pictures until way beyond my bedtime (we charged the battery during church) and loved everything about it!

My first wedding went well...I got a few really great pictures but the majority of them were underexposed and had an ugly orange tinge. I continued taking pictures with my new equipment, mostly photographing my extended family for Christmas pictures. :)

Two years ago, in October, I photographed my second wedding for some friends at church. I bought a 60mm Micro lens specifically for this wedding and I was glad that my pictures weren't as underexposed and orange-ish as my first wedding! I also was a sort of "second shooter" for my uncle's wedding in November 2010.

2011 brought me no weddings but multiple family sessions, a maternity session, and 2 engagement sessions! I also started charging $75 in the summer (I was previously just letting people pay me what they thought was fair...I was just grateful for the opportunity. :).

This year I'm the main photographer at one wedding coming up in April and a "second shooter" for another wedding in March. I'll probably be shooting some more family sessions as well, whenever the Lord brings them to me!

I'm also graduating from High School this year, so I'm very excited about starting to do photography full-time now! I'm hoping to get a website, logo, business card, and everything before the end of this year and the Lord is already starting to bring the right people to me (more about that later).

I have so much to learn about photography and yet I'm not sure where to look for the information. I know that going to this Workshop by Katelyn James would really help me solidify my style, my look, and give me the tools and confidence I need to get better at my photography so that I can bring greater glory to the Lord.

I would LOVE to go to this workshop. I know I need help and I've known these workshops would help me A TON but I've never been able to go because of the price...until now!!

Photography vs. Videography

This may seem really weird, but every now and then I think about the day (Lord willing) that I'll be getting married. I try and figure out if I would prefer to hire a really good photographer or a really good videographer for my wedding. (I know I won't have the $ for both!) Now, granted, I'm just 16 and don't think I'll be married for quite a few years but I'm just the type of person that likes to plan and think ahead...so bear with me, this post is going somewhere!

Anywho, that thought made me wonder which was more important: photography or videography? If I only had $4,000 for my wedding would I spend it on a good photographer? Or vice-versa? For awhile I thought videography was more "superior" because it recorded everything in a moving time frame. I look back at the home videos Daddy recorded of my siblings and I and I love watching them!

One day I was kind of depressed that I liked photography, because I was really thinking that videography was way better. Then I started thinking to myself "There has to be one way photography is superior to videography. I know there has to be one way."

Then it hit me.

It's the moments.

With photography you can capture, in a split second, a glance of love between an engaged couple...

...or the tenderness of a Mother with her little one...

...or the specialness of a wedding day...

....the tininess of a newborn...

...the gift of pregnancy...

...the love between siblings...

...the fleeting, gorgeous moments of creation...

..the bond between two people in love...

...the first smiles of a baby...

...and so much more.

Now, please don't think that I'm bashing videography. I love watching videos because they capture a moving story of your life as it once was. There is no replacing videography! It is so special and photography can't equal it in this regard.

But photography can capture those little moments...a little glance or a slight smile...and freeze that moment forever, in a way that (in my opinion) videos cannot.

My Little Brother

I have this little guy that I really, really love. He's mischevious, way too cute, and has the biggest, and best, smile I've ever seen! :)

Yes, I also have 7 other siblings who are the best in the world...but today, this post is about my youngest sibling, Judah. :)

Really...how can that smile not light up your day?

My oldest sister, Hannah, was reading Judah a book last week and he would close the book, then Hannah would tickle him and get these smiles out of him. :) I was sitting at the computer doing something and I had to pick up my camera and capture his little chubby cheeks!

I'm not sure why little ones seem to grab you so strongly...maybe it's just because they're so tiny...

...or always have a way of getting into things and upsetting you one second and then making you want to whip them up into your arms and give those cheeks a big kiss in the next. :)

Maybe it's the wonder they hold in their eyes as they discover something new.

Or it could be that they smile so easily?

Maybe it's his blond hair...

...or big, blue eyes.

Whatever the reason...

My New Favorite Purchase :)

I'm not sure how many of you who follow this blog and also follow my family's blog. If you don't keep up with my family blog, this post will be completely new to you. Those who do keep up with my family blog, though, will probably remember this picture:

I had posted this picture on a post about my 16th birthday. Daddy, Mama, and I visited Myrna's Boots and Bits and I got to try on some cowgirl boots. I've tried cowgirl boots on once before and I've wanted my own ever since. :) [The thing that's held me back has been the price.]

The above pictured boots were my favorite (from the ones I tried on)...I couldn't find any that I liked better.

And, after weeks of agonizing over spending $140 on shoes, I bought them. :) [One of the reasons I could justify the purchase was because they're supposed to last forever, especially if I take care of them.]

I ordered these boots from Amazon and they arrived days before they were "calculated" to arrive (yay!). I really, really like them. Yes, they were expensive...I used all my birthday money, an Amazon gift card, and some money from work to get these boots, but I think it was worth it!

Ariat makes these boots and supposedly they make them with equestrians in mind (and I'm an equestrian in my dreams, you know...).

I've never been one to be obsessive about shoes...as long as they match what I'm wearing and are pretty, I'm good. I can honestly say that these boots have me more excited than any other pair of shoes. :) My siblings brought the box up to our room while I was doing History with my sister and I had to stop school, just so I could try them on. I didn't just try them on either...I had to put my cowgirl shirt and jeans on too. :)

Yes, I've got a little bit of country in me! :) Who could go wrong with horses, jeans, barns, and more?

One of my favorite things about these boots is the floral, blue pattern on the sides.

I love how these boots look great with jean skirts, or any other kind of skirt. They go well with practically everything!

So there you have a look at my new favorite purchase! :)

I would wear these constantly but I don't want them to get destroyed yet, so I'm going to reserve them for "going out" or for riding horses only when it's very, very dry! :)

2012 Photography Goals

So, now it's 2012! I'm really starting to believe that the older I get, the faster time flies. It's a good and bad thing. :)

Seeing as it's January now, I want to write up my photography goals for this year. I've never done this before, but I'm excited to this year! I really think having my goals displayed for anyone to see will keep me accountable! :)

But before my goals are listed here, I wanted to list some praises from the past year, as well as prayers for the upcoming one!

The praises:

I've had more photography sessions this year than ever before!! I'm so grateful to everyone who entrusted me with their pictures...I don't think they realize how much of a blessing it was to capture their families, relationships, etc.
I got my own computer! We found a computer on Craigslist a few months ago and it was just what I was looking for! I had recently tried a 30-day free trial of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 and I absolutely loved it. Photoshop Elements faded very quickly as a great editing program when compared to the superb editing features of Lightroom. I was really excited about Lightroom, the only damper being that it was expensive. I mean, like $400 (that's a lot for me right now!). I was praying about how to get it for cheaper and then someone in our family found a fairly new computer, with lots of storage space, and, hold your breath, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements on it! :) It sounded perfect. (It was obvious someone in the photography circle was trying to get out of the business.) They were selling the computer, printer, and all the programs for only $400. The Lord answered my prayers beyond what I could ever have thought possible! After all, Lightroom itself cost $400 and I was getting a computer, printer, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements for just $400 (and the computer was just over a year old)! It's amazing how the Lord provides. At first, I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money for an entire new computer, but Daddy finally helped make my mind up. We went and picked up the computer and now it sits in a little corner of our business room, and it's perfect. Now I can keep all my pictures in one place, and I don't have to worry about them taking up disk space on our family computer, getting lost, accidentally deleted, etc. It's great. :) This is my little "photo corner" now:

I got my own phone for Christmas! That may not seem like a "praise" concerning my photography, but it is. You see, I couldn't get a business card until I had my own phone. :) So, now I've got a phone and I can get business cards! :)

Now, I'm sure I missed many praises from this past year, but that's what came off the top of my head! My main prayer for this year's photography endeavors is as follows:

To glorify and magnify God even more through my photography. I could never bring too much glory to God and, I say, the more the better! :) I want my clients to know how much I love the Lord and that He is the sole reason for anything good that comes out of me.

Well, time for my 2012 photography goals! I've got a quite a list!

Get a TON better at my photography! This may seem like an obvious goal but I really, really want to improve. I want to look back at this year and be shocked at how much better the pictures were than in 2011.
Post to this blog at least once a week. I'm excited about this goal! I already have ideas of what to write up each week I don't have any pictures to share! :) It will be a challenge to consistently post to this blog (and my family blog) weekly, but I'm going for it! I'm going to post personal stuff, photography info that's helped me, recent/random pictures I've taken, etc. It's going to be great. :)
Get a website and design my logo, colors, fonts, etc. This will probably be the hardest goal to complete this year. First off, I wish I could design my own website but I just don't have the time right now. So, I'm looking for a designer...but I'm picky. The designer needs to be a Christian and I want him/her to like what I like because that will make things easier! :) So, if any of you know of any great, kind, Christian (inexpensive is always nice too :) web/blog designers, please let me know about him/her!
Get business cards. I was going to wait until I got my website and "look" down before I got business cards (that way everything would match) but Daddy's encouraging me to get them now...because who knows when I'll actually get the website? Plus, he wants to be able to pass them out to his customers and such...so, hopefully I'll be getting business cards really soon! (I'll be sure to show them off on this blog when I do!)
Get professional C.D. packaging. This goal goes along with my website goal...I can't get more professional packaging until I know what colors, fonts, graphics, etc. match me, my photography, and my website. Right now I'm using these tacky, colored jewel cases to hold my C.D.'s. I've been adding some scrapbook paper and layers to the front of the C.D. but I still don't like it. I want to give my clients (sounds so weird to say that...) something so much better!
Discover new poses and find ways to articulate how to "do the pose" to my customers. I often find myself brain-dead (concerning new poses) in the middle of photo shoots and I hate it. I want to have ideas, know what I'm doing, and not stand around looking like I'm lost. It's terrible, and I'm determined to fix it. :) [Watch out, siblings, I'm sensing that I'll be using you as models soon! ;)]
Make every photo shoot look different. This means that I'm going to strive to do at least one new pose for every photo shoot. I have the same 4-6 poses I use and then, once-again, I go brain-dead and my creativity flies far, far away and my clients sit there, uncomfortable, waiting for their slow photographer to suggest something! :)
Give my clients a better experience, whether it be during the actual photo shoot, emailing, or giving them their pictures. (This whole idea comes from one of my favorite photographers, Katelyn James.) I tend to be on the shy, quiet side when I don't know someone really well and that is a terrible personality to have when you're a photographer! Most people are already nervous about having their picture taken and when their photographer timidly suggests something it doesn't calm their fears at all (I've observed this myself...). I need to know what I want, ask for it kindly and with authority (in a fun way), and, as they're figuring out the pose, encourage them! I don't want my photography shoots to be an uncomfortable experience for anyone at anytime. I really want them to enjoy themselves during the time I have with them! I also want to improve my clients experience by being up-front with everything (prices, locations, advice, etc.), so they don't have to wonder how this or that works. From the time they first email me I want everything to go smoothly and with zero confusion. I also want to bless my clients more and I plan to do this with my C.D. packaging. I have some fun ideas but I can't share them with you until I actually do it! :)

All in all, I'm really excited about the upcoming year! I've got a lot I need to work on but I already know it's going to be a great one!

By the way, it seems so weird to me, to refer to the people I took pictures of this year, as "clients". I really don't like that term. My "clients" are now my friends and I'd much rather call them as such. It's amazing how close you get to people you take pictures for! For example, a girl at church (whose family I photographed last year), excitedly waves at me whenever she sees me...and then she comes over and gives me a big hug and asks me how I'm doing. (She also calls me Miss Kimber...I don't think I'll ever get used to someone calling me "Miss"! :) I don't know if I ever talked to this particular girl before the photo shoot, and now, she treats me like I'm her best friend! It's great!

Ever since I was young I've never thought that I was a "people person"...you know, the type of person that loves talking to anyone and everyone about anything? I've actually prayed, many times, that God would give me a greater heart for people and I think, through photography, He's answered that prayer. I've found that I really enjoy getting to know families and their stories...I love hearing how engaged people met and how the proposal went...I love following around little toddlers and capturing their sweet smiles and personalities...I love holding little babies and freezing time, through a picture, of their tiny fingers and feet...I love capturing the love between a newly engaged couple, or between seasoned pros! I love it all. Every season in a person's life, from their first breaths to their last few years of life, is beautiful to me.

What a joy it is to get to capture all these things!

The Cumby Family

On December 17th I had one of the biggest photography jobs yet: taking pictures of the Cumby family! We knew Mr. and Mrs. Cumby through our old church, and we knew their daughter, Jamie Collins, through church too! Mrs. Collins contacted me in November and asked if I could come do their family pictures when they all got together for Christmas. I was, as usual, nervous to be handling so many people (some whom I'd never met) and I prayed constantly that everything would go well. (I can be a bit of a worry-wart. :) Anyways, as soon as Daddy and I walked into the Cumby house my nervousness started dissipating! Mrs. Cumby, after a hug, told me to do whatever I wanted (perfect!) and Mrs. Collins got everyone together. :)
The first pictures I took were of Mr. and Mrs. Cumby's son, Matt, and his girlfriend with their two dogs.

So cute! :)

Then all the grandkids came out and we assembled them on the steps:

I must say that everyone (even the little guys!) did a great job appearing perfectly comfortable for pictures when it was bitterly cold. :)

Boaz: 3 Months Old

My family and I were very privileged to meet the Jackson family this past August. We actually met them through an ad for a cow they were trying to sell (we had been looking for a cow for years)! Before we met them we found out that they had 11 kids (one of them, Boaz, being in utero)! We have rarely met a family bigger than our own so we were excited to meet them! Anyways, to make a long story short, we bought their cow and kept in contact. Over the months it has grown from dinner together, to meeting some Sunday nights for popcorn and a movie, and, most recently, 3 hours of exercising together! :) Yep, my sister, Hannah, and I, spent about 3 hours with the Jackson ladies (and Elijah) biking, jogging, sprinting, stretching, climbing, etc. last Saturday. Let's just say I was sore after that experience! :)

After the exercise session was over I got to take pictures of the youngest Jackson: Boaz! (Wait til you meet this litle guy....he's such a cutie!!) This photo session was so easy and laid-back (my favorite). Mrs. Jackson gave me full rein to do whatever I wanted with Boaz so I could let my creative juices run wild. :) Also the girls, Kyra, Ciara, and Gabrielle were extremely helpful in getting Boaz to smile, holding him, etc. The first 30 minutes I took pictures Boaz just wanted to nurse and sleep but the last few minutes the girls eeked some beautiful smiles out of him! (I saved those pictures for very last just to torture you. :)

So enjoy looking at precious, little Boaz (and some of his siblings)!!

I forgot to tell you that Boaz has the biggest, blue eyes!! Love them!

The Church Family

Last Saturday I had the great opportunity to photograph the Church's. One of my favorite things about the Church's is that we're related! The matriarch of the family, Aunt Megan, is my Mama's sister! Uncle Kevin and Aunt Mae-Mae are so much fun to be around and their children, Cadence, Justus, and Asher, are all absolutely beautiful!

This is Cadence, the oldest child in the family. Don't you love her little hair bow?

I would tell Cadence where to stand and she would immediately give me this huge smile! She's so precious!

Justus is the "middle child" (for now ;) and a little shy but very sweet too! He's come up to me several times, gave me a hug, and then told me he loved me. I don't think he could get much sweeter!

This picture cracks me up! Aunt Megan and Uncle Kev were telling Justus to "smile pretty" and this was the result. :)

When Mae-Mae started pretending she was going to "get" Justus he really started smiling! :)

And this is Asher, the youngest member of the family. He loves being rocked and will be your cling-on as long as Mama isn't around!

Once again, Mae-Mae is pretending to come and "get them" in this picture. I love how genuine these smiles are!

Some people want their kids to look directly at the camera for all pictures but I'd rather have genuine smiles than "forced" ones any day. Oftentimes kids don't give a genuine smile when placed in front of a camera and told "Say cheese." The most genuine ones come when they're out playing, or, in this case, being entertained by their Mama. Yes, it'd be nice if they looked at the camera but, still, I'd rather have genuine smiles than forced ones. :)

I had to go around and find some pretty photo spots near our house for these pictures. Most of the colorful Fall leaves were gone and I didn't want scraggly, brown trees in the background, so we went to our neighbor's rye field. The green grass made for really vibrant colors!

I was so amazed I got one picture with everyone smiling and *almost* everyone looking at the camera! If you've ever tried to take a family photo for someone you know how difficult that is!! (Part of the credit for all the smiles in this pic may have been due to my sister who came along to help. :)

The Nash Family

The Sunday before Thanksgiving our family went to my great-uncle's house for a Thanksgiving meal! The food was really yummy and we saw lots of our relatives. After the stuffing lunch (no pun intended), I took some quick family portraits for my Uncle Sean, Aunt Amanda, and cousin, Cameron. (You may remember Cameron from the newborn pictures I took of him!)

I don't usually start my posts with unhappy pictures but Cameron's face was too precious! He obviously didn't appreciate being placed on the fence post. :)

The Lord has blessed me immensely with lots of photo shoots this year (11 for the entire year)! I had a photo shoot this past Saturday (pictures will be coming), I have another one this weekend and my last one of the year (right now :) is on Dec. 17th.

I've really been enjoying all these opportunities to fine tune my skills and bring glory to Jesus!

One day this past February, we were over at Courtney's house celebrating her birthday. We ate some yummy snacks, talked, and played a version of "Hot Potato" in the front yard (in the cold, Feb. weather), and then watched Courtney and Grant (who happens to have the same b-day) open their gifts. Once all the gifts were opened, there was a little bit of an awkward silence for a few minutes. And I don't remember exactly how it started but Courtney soon started out on a game that led her to a note card, then to another. After going from the front yard to the backyard, into the house, then outside again, over and over again she finally stopped by their T.V. She found the hidden note, read the rhyming words, and then, when she looked up, Grant was down on one knee. And he proposed (rhyming the whole time!)! Her reply was a joking "I don't know, Grant", and when everyone laughed, she said "Sure" with a big smile. They were engaged!!! :)

This was totally their idea. (Honestly, if my photographer asked me to go in this tree, I probably would've had my fiance go in there and clean out the spiderwebs/bugs before I would venture inside. But this was, once again, Court and Grant's idea so they didn't even hesitate! :)

The Beninghove Family!

First off, I have to tell you how amazing this family is! :) We were planning on doing the pictures this past Saturday but, when the weather was forecasting rain, we switched to Friday. Well Friday dawned and it was freezing! :) Not only was it freezing but there was a cold, piercing breeze too! It was cold! Nevertheless, they all were amazing troopers! You never would guess (by the pictures below) that it was freezing outside! Everyone would quickly take their coat off for a few pictures and then put them back on and warm up before doing it again. All the little B's were great troopers. Micah, the youngest, wasn't too happy when he first got there but once we let him go play he really warmed up! :)

Anyways, this entire family is so, so sweet! The children are so happy and they listened to anything I'd suggest...doing it with a smile! Mr. and Mrs. B also made my job easy by encouraging the little ones and smiling all. the. time. :)

Jon & Erin are Engaged!!!

I have no idea how to start this post...I could tell you about how our family met Mr. Jon (a.k.a. Dowy to my family) at church one day and how he started coming over for popcorn and a movie every Sunday night (and stayed up til the wee hours of the morning talking to Daddy :)...or how we met Erin at Chick-Fil-A a week or two before Mr. Jon introduced her to us as they began their relationship together. Or I could tell you about how great these two are, which would take a long, long time. Or I could tell you that they met at Chick-Fil-A, where Erin works, and after about a year of praying about a potential relationship, Dowy and Erin started seeking the Lord as to whether or not they were meant for each other. So the months of "courting" began...it has been so fun to watch! We knew Mr. Jon fairly well but Erin was new to us and, once we met her, we liked her immediately! The weeks passed by and every time we talked to Erin there always was a huge smile on her face...and whenever Mr. Jon came by that smile got bigger. After a few months, we all knew what was coming... after all, everyone could see that they were meant for each other! In mid-September, Dowy proposed to Erin under a pier in the OBX and she said "yes!" And so the love began. :)

I was amazingly blessed to be able to take Dowy and Erin's engagement pictures (my first ever!) 8 days ago at Massanutten Resort. Our family was planning on going hiking that day so we invited Dowy and Erin along saying "We could get engagement pictures in the mountains!" They agreed and it worked out great! Lexi held my extra lens for me and Hannah watched all of my siblings so that they wouldn't get in the pictures (Daddy and Mama were trying to get convinced to buy a timeshare there).

So, enjoy all of my favorites...and thank you, Erin and Dowy, for entrusting me with your photos! You guys are too cute! ;) I can't wait for March!

Ever since my Uncle, Sean, got married, we've wondered what it would be like to see him as a Daddy. Uncle Sean has always been the fun, silly guy who keeps everyone smiling. Well, a month or two after getting married we heard that Aunt Amanda was pregnant! We were so excited and 9 months seemed to be forever! :) Well, the day finally came and little Cameron came into the world on 10/1/11! Exactly a week later, Mama and my siblings, Hannah, Lexi, and Judah (along with myself) went to take them some food. And, lucky me, Uncle Sean asked if I would bring my camera along to get some pictures of Cameron! :) :)

5:20 A.M. dawned dark and early. I could've slept in another 25 minutes but I was so nervous I couldn't go back to sleep. So, I got up and got ready for the day. I grabbed the two lenses I was going to use and walked out to our gazebo with my sister, Hannah. We were spending a few days at a beautiful house in Nags Head, NC and soon some friends from church were going to arrive for a sunrise maternity photo shoot (yep, they're that awesome!). I was going to get to take my first ever maternity pictures (other than my Mama's)! I was so nervous yet excited at the same time...I just wanted to get started so the butterflies would go away. As we waited on the gazebo, with the wind blowing our hair around, the sun started to rise and paint vibrant colors on the sky. Thank you, Lord! I murmured. My prayer for a beautiful sunrise was answered! :) A little while later, I saw the lights in the driveway and went out to meet my friends, Mr. and Mrs. Etheredge! As soon as I got a hug from both of them, the nervousness started going away. We walked to the gazebo and then I took Mrs. Amara down to the beach for some silhouette "baby belly" photos. And we spent the rest of our time together laughing and smiling! Here are some of their pictures!

To say that Mr. Jason and Mrs. Amara were hard to photograph would be a lie! They made everything so easy for me (though I'm sure they noticed my nervousness! :) and were willing to do anything! They were great!

The pier that was nearby allowed us to get some great pictures! I love that light in the upper right corner of the pictures! :)

As we were walking back to our house, I noticed that the sun had finally made his appearance and so we did some more silhouette pictures! :)

Isn't the sunrise amazing?! God is so good! :)

The ultrasound picture was completely their idea...I loved it! :)

It took Mrs. Amara a good amount of effort to get her rings off for these pictures! I'm grateful that she made the sacrifice, though, because I love taking pictures of rings! :)

Lots and Lots of Yellow Flowers!

If you love the color yellow, this post is for you! For some reason the flowers we have blooming now are almost all yellow (which the exception of my lovely roses ;)!!

We planted sunflowers a few years ago, and haven't planted any since, but every year we get beautiful sunflowers! We think that the birds who eat the seeds must spill some on the ground where they wait to germinate until the next year. :)

Lots of bright yellow! :)

The other yellow flowers around our home are from some wildflower seeds Mama "planted". They're quite beautiful, too! :)

I just love when the sun illuminates flowers and I liked how I got a little sun flare in the bottom right corner! :)

Hannah's 17th Birthday Portraits

My lovely sister, Hannah, turned 17 years old yesterday!!

Two days ago my cousins, Kaitlyn and Sarah, were over and Kaitlyn decided to straighten Hannah's hair. (Not an easy task, if you've seen my sister's voluminous amounts of hair!! ;)

After over an hour of straightening, Kaitlyn and Lexi dressed and "beautified" Hannah. :) Next, of course, came the pictures! :)

I have a slight obsession with Hannah's eyelashes...they are so long! :)

So pretty!!

This is Hannah's genuine, all-natural smile. :)

The big bay window in our room made for some beautiful portraits! :) :)

We call this the "model look." ;)

It was lots of fun posing Hannah and laughing with her throughout our mini photo-shoot. Kaitlyn and Lexi were great helps to me in holding up backgrounds and keeping Hannah laughing (which isn't hard to do :).

It was Kaitlyn's idea to put our green avocado plant behind Hannah for some of the pictures. The plant added a nice, natural touch! ;)

What's even better about Hannah is that she's even more gorgeous on the inside!! She has a huge heart for the people around her and she loves Jesus Christ so much! She daily demonstrates efficiency and kindness in our family and loves helping Daddy with anything he needs. From the Master Chinese Chef in our family to the first person up every day, she quietly leads by example.

I will never, ever ask for a better older sister...because there is none to be found. I love you Hannah and wish you a wonderful yet belated 17th birthday!

Fuzzy Dandelions

As I was trying to figure out what the below plants were called, I asked my sister, Hannah, and she said "Dandelions." I was like "Dandelions?? Those yellow flowers? This doesn't look like a dandelion?!"

So she said "Why don't you look it up on Google?" I followed her advice, and lo and behold, she was right!!! :)

I thought dandelions were those slightly uninteresting, bright yellow flowers.

Lesson of the day: dandelions have more than one form! :)

Personally I love this form much better than the yellow flower!

Who doesn't like fluffy white things?! :)

Dandelions (in the form pictured) have always amazed me. One of my favorite things to do when I was younger (and sometimes now ;) is to see if I can blow the little seeds off the plant. :) Daddy, being a landscaper, always playfully calls out "No, no, no!" as I blow the seeds away. (Dandelions are not the lawn care workers best friend! ;)

One last little note: a website I just looked at said the yellow dandelion flower is the yellow composite flower and the white, fluffy balls are the dandelion's seed head.

2 Rose Photos!!!

My rose plant is so pretty! Right now I have 2 full-bloomed roses and so many more buds coming! It's so exciting! :)

I just love being able to cut off a rose and put it in a vase on our table or give it to someone at church. It's great! :)

The Blue Family

Last Saturday I had the privilege of photographing the Blue family! They are such a fun, sweet family and for a few months I've wanted (secretly ;) to take pictures of them. Mr. and Mrs. Blue's love for each other is so sweet and inspiring, and the children are so happy! Conclusion: they're a gorgeous and just-plain-wonderful family! :)

(Miss Trinity (middle) wasn't too excited about pictures at first, but I've got some happy pictures coming up! :)

Kendall is the oldest child of the family. She was very willing to go wherever I wanted her to go for pictures and has a beautiful smile!

Lovin' on Daddy...

Micah is the oldest boy and a little shy but very sweet too!

I think the below photo is one of the sweetest Father-Son pictures ever! I just love how Micah has his hands around his Daddy's neck...you can just feel the love and trust emanating!

Trinity (the second girl) wasn't excited about standing for pictures...at first. She warmed up as soon as she could go play, but I thought that even her "not so happy" faces were adorable!

Kendall came over as we were attempting to get Trinity to smile, and helped us out a little bit! I thought this series of photos were too cute not to post! :)

Once we were finished with "posed" pictures Trinity really warmed up and started smiling like crazy. I have to admit, I think the 0-4 age range is one of my favorite ages to capture!!

I love the way Trinity walks. She looks like a little princess: hands held behind her back, walking slow and careful...it's absolutely adorable!

Now I'll introduce you to Miss Lily, the youngest member of the family, and such a cutie-pie!

At the beginning of the photo session, Mr. Blue said to Mrs. Blue, "Want me to pick you up like I did on our wedding day?" Mrs. Blue was a little hesitant, so we didn't take the pictures then, but at the end of the session Mr. Blue offered again and Mrs. Blue agreed! I was so happy!!

Aren't they so sweet?!!! I could go on and on about them!

Guess What??!!

My rose plant bloomed!! That may not seem like such a big deal to some of you, but for me...it's big! I've watched my plant get planted, grow a little bit, and then watched a little bud begin to unfurl! And, wow! The rose is absolutely beautiful! I had no idea what it was going to look like and it far surpassed what I was expecting!!! I love it!!! Not only is my rose gorgeous (in my humble opinion ;), but it has a delightful fragrance!

As soon as I finished my math test, I hurried outside and took some photos for a few minutes. I had so many pictures I liked that I'll just share most of them with you. :)

I'll let you in on a secret...these "droplets" are fake...I sprayed them on. :) Once I sprayed them on I was like "Wow, a little bit of overkill on the water droplets," so I shook some off! :)

I told you there were a lot of pictures! ;)

I'll start this post off with a thank you to Sarah for giving me the Stylish Blogger Award! Sarah and her sister, Rebekah, just recently started following me and they've left me many kind comments (thanks!).

For this award I need to share 8 things about myself. I'll try and give you 8 things you probably don't know about me...here it goes:

1. I've shown a miniature horse in our State Fair twice.

2. I don't have a favorite color. They're all so beautiful! If I had to choose I would lean towards pastel colors, but I also like vibrant colors...so you see...I really can't pick just one color! :)

3. I usually wear skirts, but flowy comfortable dresses are my favorite!

4. I'm really looking forward to my graduation next year. Not just because I'm graduating but because I might get a really pretty dress and make a nice cake and...I could go on and on.

5. I'm going to photograph my friend's wedding next year!

6. Horses are my favorite animal (nothing else even comes close :).

7. I'm taller than everyone in my family other than Daddy. (My older sister loves it when I point this out! ;)

8. I'd love to have a big rose garden one day. Currently I have one little plant, but hopefully we'll be getting at least 1 more soon! [I feel like I've told everyone I know about this...]

God Answers Unspoken Prayers!!

For a few months now I have wanted a little bag that could carry one, maybe two lenses. I have a huge backpack that carries everything-camera I own (well, pretty much) and it weighs way too much to lug around a park for 2 hours. Plus, I don't need every memory card and instruction manual when I'm photographing someone. All I need is my camera, one (maybe two) lenses, and an extra memory card/battery just "in case."

I had thought about praying for one but never really took the time to sit down and ask God to provide me with one. I probably just thought "I'd really like a little camera bag," once or twice and left it at that.

Well, last week a friend from church contacted my sister and I (who enjoys taking pictures too!) and asked if we wanted a little Case Logic bag she had. I said we'd take a look at it and she brought it to church one night.

It was perfect!

It holds two lenses (my 50 1.8 and one other lens) and contains different pockets where I can put a memory card and a battery!

Isn't the Lord amazing?! He answered my unspoken prayer just because He could. Oh, how I love Him! :)

First of all, this post has been waiting to happen for a long time! I've wanted to post some pictures from Nick and Becca's wedding *last year* but haven't made time to do it...until today! :) Yesterday they celebrated their 5-month wedding anniversary and now I'm just getting around to posting their photos! (I will try and not let this happen...ever again!)

Anyways, a few of you may remember the "sneak peek" I posted from their wedding two days after it took place. I will resume where I left off! :)

To give a quick recap, Becca had approached me after church one Wednesday night and asked if I would be the photographer for her and Nick's wedding. I wasn't expecting anything close to her request, so I said I would pray about it. After a few days I didn't feel anything (or Anyone) telling me not to be the photographer, so I said "yes!"

Nick and Becca were married on October 9th, 2010 (10.9.10. - what a cool date!) and I really enjoyed being a part of their day. I knew Nick was a fun guy, so if Becca was marrying him she had to be fun too! And they were! Their wedding day was full of smiles and laughter and I really enjoyed my time with them!

Here are some photos from their special day!

As the church was getting ready, the wedding party was getting ready in different rooms. I'll introduce you to the ever-radiant, Becca, first!

Becca had a friend from church make her dress and it turned out great!!

...as well as fun! :)

Before the ceremony, I got to take Nick and Becca' rings for some up-close photos!

I absolutely love Becca's ring!!!

As I was taking the photos of the rings people were starting to arrive, giving hugs and signing the guest book.

Then came the ceremony! I loved the moment when Becca walked around the corner, into full view, holding onto her Daddy's arm. You could just sense that everyone was holding their breath!!

One last hug for Daddy...

Husband and wife! Yippee!!

Nick and Becca then went into the 242 cafe where they stood and greeted everyone who came! There were lots of smiles going around!

As people were weaving through the line, shaking hands and giving hugs to the wedding party a lady shouted out "They forgot to kiss!!"

Yes, somehow that part got left out of the ceremony!

Kissing soon followed! :)

Once everyone had a chance to congratulate the new couple, we went into the Sanctuary for the formal photos!

This wedding party kept me laughing the entire time! My cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much!

We then headed to Ashland Church of God where the reception was held!

Inside the gym, a delightful table of food awaited the wedding party and guests!

When the wedding party arrived and was announced, everyone started going through the line, eating and talking to friends!

There were lots of neat items micro-worthy at the reception!

The bubbles looked like a bride and groom...

Hershey Kisses were printed with the occasion along with...

...lollipops!

This was just a light I liked! :)

Soon it was time for the toasts and then came the cake cutting.

Such a neat cake!

I persuaded Nick and Becca to disappear for a little bit during the reception so we could go outside and take some photos of just the two of them! I'm so glad they agreed!!!

When we were finished laughing ourselves silly Nick and Becca found out that someone had wrapped their rental car in plastic wrap!!

The culprits were soon found but the events went on! :) Becca threw her bouquet and then they said goodbye to friends and family before preparing to walk through the barrage of bubbles that awaited their exit!

As soon as they unwrapped their car they were off to live happily ever after!!

The Hintz Family!

Fun. Kind. Beautiful. Those are my 3 words for the Hintz family I had the privilege of photographing this past Thursday!

We had previously planned to take pictures on Friday but the Lord worked it out so that we went on Thursday! I was so glad we did because the weather was gorgeous and we had lots of fun together! The Lord answered so many of my prayers! (I pray before every photo shoot!)

Praise #1. We had fun and the weather was beautiful!

Praise #2. I shot with a prime (a.k.a. fixed) lens for the first time! I loved shooting with my 50mm 1.8!

Praise #3. I focused manually the whole photo shoot!!! I've never shot (photographer's term for "photographed" :) anyone manually (other than my family members), so this was a big leap for me!

But, I know you're waiting to see the pictures of this lovely family...so here they are!!

I'll start with the youngest member: Miss Leah.

Leah was probably the most active member of the family!

Michael is the "middle child" and quite a sweetie! As we were finishing up our photo shoot, and on our way to the animals, he gave me a little plucked buttercup! So sweet! :)

Rachel is the oldest child and full of energy! She told me about how she wants to become an author one day and the various things she's interested in. It was so fun getting to know her, and her family, better!

Last month, I had the wonderful opportunity of going to photograph a newborn and some of his family.

As baby Joey was getting ready for his pictures, I took a few pictures of his brother and Mama!

Joey was awake for most of his pictures because he absolutely refused to fall asleep without his Mama holding him! I'm glad we got some pictures of him asleep and awake! :)

So, I told everyone I was having problems with my blog...and it's fixed now! Funny thing is that it didn't get fixed until I prayed for it... The Lord has such wonderful ways of reminding to not forgot Him, even in my everyday, "little" stuff! I'm so excited I can now upload more pictures to the blog! I'll hopefully get the pictures of the little newborn up as soon as possible! I've been waiting forever to show you guys!
